Google Plus: Success or Failure?

To cap my examination of the most popular social media networks, I'll take a look at the fairly new Google Plus. Many analysts tabbed touted it as the Facebook Killer. But now after the buzz has subsided, it appears Google Plus may just be another social network to add to the list. Though it boasts 25 million users, how many are active users? Do you have a Google Plus account? I don't and I have very few friends that do. And those that do own an account don't use it that much. So what's Google's next move?

This month, Google utilized its search engine to boost the company's social networking site. Google promoted the change with a blue arrow from its search-engine box to Google Plus in the upper left corner. The move paid off, with visitors to the social networking site increasing thirteen fold. "Theoretically, Google has the edge" over Facebook, IDC analyst Scott Ellison says. "Google has search, Android, Youtube, Gmail," Ellison says. "Facebook just doesn't have as many assets."

While it appears Google is making moves to compete with the social giant that is Facebook, I don't see them overtaking them in the social media realm.

  1. Google+ might as well be under Google Ventures right now. They cannot compete with Facebook on a mass level right now and they know it. The fact of the matter is- they are ok with it. Google+ is a long term investment as an asset, an asset that will continue to mature over time just like the rest of their investments. 2. I agree that there is no comparison with Google+ and Facebook, but that could easily change in a short amount of time. Not to long ago people were saying similar things about facebook never being as successful as Myspace, who is saying that now? Google is a smart company they don't just do something with hopes it will succeed, i can almost guarantee they are only biding their time!

  3. Just as a personal opinion, I just could not get used to Google+ at all. I got it when the site first opened and thought it was cool at first but I have only logged in to check it three times in the three months I have had the account. There is nothing that Google has done wrong with the site, in fact it was pretty easy to use and visually appealing. However, I feel like I can't pull myself away from Facebook long enough to get used to another social networking site such as Google+.
