Do you know anybody that doesn't have Facebook? I don't. I'd be willing to bet if you asked ten strangers if they had Facebook maybe only one would say no. Facebook has taken the world by storm and has achieved overwhelming success. It is the unrivaled leader in social media networking.
Facebook's revenue doubled to 1.6 million in 2011's first half. These stronger results have come from investors pushing its value in private markets. In response to this success, rival Google Inc. launched Google+, which attracted over 10 million users in its first week. Many experts believe Google is doing the right things to compete with Facebook by offering games like poker and the very popular Angry Birds

I watched "The Social Network" last night and I too was blown away by the overwhelming success of Facebook. What really caught my attention was how fast Facebook caught on. Now obviously the facts from the movie were not entirely true so I did a little research:
ReplyDeleteFacebook was started at Harvard in February of 2004 and within a month had moved to three new colleges. Like you said Facebook took "the world by storm" and only a year later had over one million members!
I definitely think Google is doing the right thing by adding new features such as Angry BIrds to aid in attracting new customers and make an attempt at getting "their piece of the pie."
Google+ is definitely scaring Facebook a little--they soon added similar features to Google+ as interest in the new site started to grow. However, as I mentioned in another comment--although initial interest and participation in Google+ was pretty high, the interest and traffic on the social network site has died down considerably. Given how good Google is at giving consumer what they want, I'm interested to see how, in addition to adding games, they pull people into their site and away from Facebook.
ReplyDeleteI actually do know lots friends that doesn't have a facebook account and lots of them are Japaneses. It's quiet interesting that Japan is one of the most developed countries with all those electronics but facebook doesn't really get in to the market in Japan. Some of my Japanese friends might have facebook account but they rarely use. Maybe texting message and msn messengers are more used for them.
